About

Blocking prevents damage to the player, but some is still received. The damage received is calculated as follows: - If the blocking item has an applicable resistance, reduce the damage. - Reduce damage based on block armor value (the same formula as armor). - Leftover physical and lightning damage is converted to staggering. If the stagger bar is filled, the player staggers and the block fails (step 2 doesn't apply). - Leftover damage is further reduced by other resistances and worn armor. - Leftover physical and lightning damage is converted to staggering . If the stagger bar is filled, the player staggers but the block doesn't fail.

Overview

Blocking is one of Valheim's character skills, tracked under the internal ID Blocking. Damage absorbed when blocking with a weapon or shield.

Experience is gained at 0.5 per blocked attack (+0.5 when parrying).

At max level (100) it grants +50% block armor.

Adjust your level from the console with raiseskill Blocking 10 to add 10 points, or resetskill Blocking to wipe it back to 0.

Leveling & Death Penalty

Every Valheim skill ranges from level 0 to 100, and its bonus grows as the level climbs — the +50% block armor above is the full value you reach at level 100. Blocking earns experience at 0.5 per blocked attack (+0.5 when parrying), so it climbs fastest when you use it deliberately.

Dying is the catch: each death drains roughly 5% of your level in every skill, Blocking included, so a hard-won level erodes quickly on a dangerous run. To claw it back without the grind, run raiseskill Blocking 10 — that adds ten levels at once, and you can pass any amount (or a negative number to lower it). Prefer a clean slate? resetskill Blocking wipes the skill back to 0.
